The South African Longline fishing vessel Sudur Havid sank in South Georgia waters on 6 June 1998 in position 53 55 S 041 24W.
21 of the crew survived, including the British Fisherioes Observer, but sadly 17 died.
There are two memorials to the 17 victims. This one is in the Grytviken church. The other is a cross on the hillside above the cemetery.
